  Each of us has experienced times of joy and challenge.  While we relish the happiness life can bring, it's often through our greatest challenges that we experience rebirth, spiritual awakening, or shamanic reawakening.  Those life challenges, or what are shamanically viewed as initiations, often come in the form of loss, grief, illness, and pain.  They are deep and often lonely.  Those that leave us emotionally, physically, or spiritually shattered are considered dismemberments.  Whether through initiation or dismemberment, our souls evolve.  That evolution often paves the way for the heart of the healer to emerge.  It is then that we may find ourselves in the place of service.  We bring forward gifts that come through our choice to use our experience for the benefit of others, the Earth, and Spirit.
